For U.S. citizens:
All Americans need a passport in order to travel by air outside the USA. If you are traveling outside the country on a cruise, and you embark your ship in one U.S. city and disembark in another U.S. city, a passport is required. If you embark and disembark your ship in the SAME U.S. city, you may still travel with an original or certified copy of your birth certificate accompanied by a government-issued photo I.D. (like a driver's license) instead of a passport.
If you decide to risk traveling on your cruise without a passport, you could have difficulty returning home if a situation arose that prompted you to fly home during your vacation from a foreign port -- for example, an emergency back home or an illness or injury while you are traveling. For this reason, we join the cruise lines in recommending that everyone obtain a passport for any kind of international travel.
It is the passenger's responsibility to provide acceptable proof of citizenship. The cruise lines will not let anyone on the ship who does not have the proper identification with them upon embarkation.
Some European and exotic destinations will require a visa in addition to the passport. Again, your Cruise Holidays specialist will advise you on requirements for your selected itinarary.
For Non-U.S. citizens:
Proof of citizenship requirements vary depending upon circumstances. Normally, an Alien resident card (green card) with photo I.D. will be required, or a valid passport and a valid U.S. multiple re-entry visa. We also advise that you contact the appropriate consulate to inquire about any additional travel documentation requirements. Your Cruise Holidays specialist can advise you.
